72S SB with clashes

Post by SteveP » Sun Mar 03, 2013 3:28 pm

Have they been reported?

I had a on offer to search a dealer's recent purchase of over 500 raw silver Ikes (72, 74, 76, but no 71 or 73s) :D I went in yesterday and only had time to briefly sort out the 72S Ikes. Nothing super special*, but I culled out a few high higher grade coins (possible 67-68) without a shadow/contrail, a few possible 67s with a shadow/contrail**, and two clashed Ikes: one had a grade A Jaw Line & Moon line, while the other had a Grade A UDU. I bought them for $9 a piece and sent them off to PCGS. No photos yet (I'll post some photos when the coins get back from PCGS), and no high powered loop inspection for other clashes.

I just wanted to get an idea from the members here of how uncommon these types of clashes on a 72S SB might be.

*I did not have loops with me, so I borrowed some low powered loops there
**Still looking for a 72S SB with a shadow/contrail in MS68 ;)

Hi Steve & others...

I see no one has ever responded to your questions about the CLASHES on 1972 S 40% Silver Ikes...
I too have looked at over 1,000... of 72-S BS Ikes... very rare to find ANY clashed coins.... the best I ever did find was 1 UDU diva... 2SB-405 & a few hair crack 2SB-401 coins... 1 had some other die cracks in the hair around the edges (look for them)...

Lastly, I did find a few (3) coins with Die Cracks on the REVERSE... directly thru the 2 L's of Dollar....
all are exactly the same cracks.... other then that nothing else....

So all in all... I concluded that clashes on ANY 72-S BS Ikes are very rare... the TDO (nightmare on elm street) & the UDU are extremely rare... would be very interesting to know who else have found these coins.... (my suggestion is to hang on to them as they are very hard to find!!!) Here is hoping others chime in... :-)

Shasta...

I found this one with what must be a super grade A clash

This shiny spot under the E has a sharp edge at the back

I think the extra vertical line in his eye is from the clash

You can see a little bit at the far edge of the crater

I'm certain that PCGS would not label it as a clash. I'm not certain whether NGC or ANACS label clashes. Since all of my clashed Ikes in holders are in PCGS holders, that is where I would send it, but absent that particular motivation, look into whether NGC or ANACS would label it as a clash.

If this was in a TPG holder at say MS66 what would you think it might be worth?

Guess: $150-200 with the right collector

I agree.... market today is light.... if others were found... could be Diva's....
also higher grade would also make price much higher....
