72D Eisenhower D'ollar

Post by NEKRay » Tue Apr 04, 2017 5:49 pm

There's a whole lot of abrading going on. There's several spot gouges from abrading tool which show throughout the fields and is the first time I've seen die work done to restore the dots in EPU. Abraded almost Pegger, dropped position hairlip, blinded eye, and very little design remains in ear. Obviously late ditch efforts to extend the life of these dies. MS66? or does excess die work kill that? Mike

Depends on what day of the week it is at PCGS...

Years ago I wouldn't have put it past MS65. It actually used to be tough to get a clad MS66 Ike out of PCGS.

Today: that's a MS67+

Seriously, I don't find it to have the best eye appeal. Lot of marks in the fields from the pictures. It's 65 on a good day with one eye covered in my mind. If it did go 66, is it really worth the cost/risk since you can buy one for less than $100 on eBay sometimes?

Are those die chip dots southeast of E and between W & E? If so, I really like this coin!
Don't think it will go 66 at PCGS...65 at best.

Happy Hunting!

Yes Brian...such heavy tooling on this die, a lot going wrong. Been pawing trough the 72-D stash and no other mate to this has turned up. Here's a couple attempts at close-ups.Thanks much for taking a look and commenting! Mike
