WHO is attributing Varieties at PCGS?????

Post by GrandAm » Tue Apr 04, 2017 7:52 pm

I can't believe this,,,,,, I just had grades POP at PCGS and (1) coin is a 1971-D FEV.

I requested Variety attribution on this coin and even listed the FS-901 info,,,, RDV-006,,,, coin #509951.

It just graded as MS66 but as a regular 1971-D coin #7407.

I just called and was told PCGS doesn't recognize this variety?????? :o :o :o :o :o

So I have a coin in a PCGS holder with all this info on the label so I gave the girl the cert number and hopefully she gets it fixed before they ship it.

Here is the info off the coin that I just sold days ago,,,,,

PCGS Coin Information
PCGS # 509951
Date, mintmark 1971-D
Denomination $1
Variety "Friendly Eagle" FS-901 Type 1 Reverse RDV-006
Country The United States of America
Grade MS65
Holder Type Standard

Same coin number, same FS-901, same RDV-006 that I listed on my submission form.

So who says they don't recognize this variety?????

It is a nice coin and a FEV in a PCGS MS66 holder will be a nice score IF I can get it fixed.

Here is the rest of the submission:

Order #21199625 / Submission #158309
Account Home > Order Details
Line # Item # Cert # PCGS No. Description Grade Country
1 1 8374xxxx 5898 1976-S 25C Silver MS67 USA
2 1 8374xxxx 7407 1971-D $1 MS66 USA
3 1 8374xxxx 97409 1972 $1 Type 2 MS62 USA
3 2 8374xxxx 97409 1972 $1 Type 2 MS63 USA
4 1 8374xxxx 7410 1972-D $1 MS66 USA
5 1 8374xxxx 7418 1976 $1 Type 1 MS65 USA
6 1 8374xxxx 7425 1978 $1 MS65 USA

The only actual grade I am unhappy with is the 1978 IKE. It is a MS66 all day long and will be cracked out,

I've had this happen on more than one occasion - literally. Each time, I lost on the deal. They refuse to cover all the back and forth shipping, etc. PCGS SUCKS in terms of customer care. You have to go right to BJ Searls or a small handful of others to get reasonable response/help.

By the way I saw the 71S Peg Leg population has one at MS68. Yeah right. I guarantee that's a mislabeled proof. How many times has that happened to other issues....

You'd think in this business, they'd have FAR better accountability.

I made the original call to PCGS at 4;30 PM CA time yesterday and asked to put the order on hold so the coin could be double checked for the variety before it got shipped..

So today I deceided to call back at 9:00 AM PCGS time and see if it was on hold,,,,,,, it was not so I explained again and was told again PCGS does not recognize the FEV.

So I explained again and asked to have the coin double checked again but I feel like I am talking to a brick wall.

If I can't get customer service to agree that they even recognize the variety not sure how I will get them to pull it and have it double checked.

I will have to wait and see what happens.

This is precisely why I have never submitted (and probably will never submit) anything to a TPG that I know qualifies as a DIVa, and pay the "profiteers" for their "Pork (useless plastic case that makes the coin "intangible") n' Beans (useless bean shaped sticker w/ the letters "CAC " or "QA" from yet another pirate seeking aggrandizement). I can be just as happy and save a lot of $ comfortably knowing my grade estimation is relative; and I can enjoy the coins knowing I have hardly anything more than .25 + face value in them. Of that, someone will almost always be able to get back what I put into it, and I can enjoy the unique toning and colors of this fascinating coin as time progresses.

I just thank the group for their ingenuity of bringing all these die varieties to light, making them a true rarity in mintage of a large coin that managed to make it to the public despite the odds against it.

Big G, it's hopeless. The basic customer service folks on the phone are absolute numismatic idiots. What everyone needs to understand is that these people know nothing about coins - seriously. They only know the business systems and the standard operating procedures they've been trained on.

Like I said above you'll never break even on this whole event. I bet that coin was boxed up and ready to be sent back before you called, with no intention of it ever being re-evaluated regardless of your efforts.
