Todd,

The 1971D Type 1 Eisenhower dollar is the one with the Friendly Eagle reverse (also labeled as 1971D FS-901). 1971D Type 1 is a new designation for the Friendly Eagle. Although far fewer were minted than the 1971D Type 2, it is appropriate that the Friendly Eagle reverse Eisenhower dollar is, in fact, called Type 1, since they were minted before the Type 2 1971D dollars.

The 1971D Type 2 has the same reverse as the 1971 Philadelphia Ikes, the 1972D Ikes, and the 1972 Type 1 Ikes. Admittedly, it can be a source of confusion that the 1971D Type 2 and the 1972 Type 1 bear the same reverse design. However, just remember - the reverse the deep brow furrow, and three islands to the right of the tip of Florida was used second in 1971 in Denver (1971D Type 2), first in 1972 in Philadelphia (1972 Type 1).

Primarily due to lower mintage, for every grade, the 1971D Type 1 should exceed the value of a 1971D Type 2.

The Type 1 1971D is one of my favorites - because of the history behind its production and design.....and also because of the numerous sub-varieties with the Type:
  • - three different RPMs
    - a number of double die manifestations: DDO-001, DDO-002, DDR, DDO/DDR
    - die cracks: "oh no", "TED"
    - peg leg
