Grading 71s mint sealed ikes

Post by Texascoinrebel » Sat Feb 28, 2015 5:37 pm

With all the haze/toning on the 1971s blue ikes does anyone know how much slack is given as to lack of luster. Thought I had a cherry and it came back ms 65. I thought for sure it would be a 66.

I haven't submitted coins to NGC in their OGP. Given that the haze and packing can look awful, I wonder, like you, how much just those factors would take away from the grade given.
I can't give feedback about your 71S SB, because the photo doesn't lend itself to a grade attempt.
I often will dip a hazy SB Ike before sending it on to PCGS. I have nearly always been very pleased with the appearance of the coin after dip vs before.
Proof Ikes, on the other hand, are ones that I send to PCGS for restoration if they have ugly hazing - particularly if they are a more important variety. I'm just not satisfied with my Ike proof restoration skills yet. I can't speak for NGC's restoration service, as I have no results on which to base my opinion. I do have several coins at NGC right now, submitted to go through their restoration service.

Welcome to the Ike Group forum, by the way!

Welcome to the Ike Group Forum. I haven't picked up very many blue Ike's uncertified, certified on the other hand I have picked up a few. I just got a 1973-S MS 65 the other day from GreatCollections and I really like my 1974-S MS 67+.

That's a nice stash lol. I'm going to press on with my purchasing 1971s mint sealed ikes. Hoping for that 66-67-68
