Coin Grading !!

Post by Buster_57 » Thu Jun 22, 2017 10:53 pm

I was reading a post from AndyO and StevenP - Last night about grading and it's accuracy - I personally send all of my coins to ANACS coins for grading.
I have two questions:

1). Who is the most accurate Grading company ??

2). How far off is / are the ANACS coins from the other Grading companies. ???

Sincerely: Buster

Accurate !!

Let's say you have an Eisenhower Dollar that you know for a fact that would be or / should be graded as an MS 68 - but - when you get it back from ANACS - it is graded as an MS 69 or even an MS 70 - or ever vice ver·sa.. You know that this grading is totally wrong.

But - if you have your coin graded by - let's say - PCGS Certification and your coin comes back exactly as you expected - then they would be rated as one of the best grading companies.

But - let's look at the Fact - That everybody and I mean everybody has a different opinion about grading a coin - so ..

The Questions still stands - Who can be trusted as being very Accurate when grading a coin...

Sincerely: Buster

Take some time to dig way deep into the old archives here. There's several threads talking about the TPGs and who does what the best. To re-hash would be lengthy.

Long story short, in order of general collector consensus:
1. PCGS
2. crap shoot, but probably NGC
3. whomever you decide beyond those two

The reason why I am asking is that I opened up a 1969 Proof set a few months ago and I found a very rare - 1969 S Proof DDO in MS condition - In the Big Red book [ 2017 version ] it / one like it - an MS 63 - sold at auction for $14,100.00 and I am looking for a very trustworthy grading company to send it too.

Thank you so very much for your time and trouble.

Sincerely: Buster

Need to clarify:

You state proof and MS in the same thought, which is it?
What is the denomination?
Is it listed in the Cherrypicker's Guide? Does it therefore have a FS number?

If it does have a FS number, I would send it to PCGS.

For a coin of that caliber...(If genuine), I would go with PCGS.
I am assuming you are talking about the 69-S DDO Lincoln cent. These DDO's are MS and not found
in Proof sets. You said you found it in a proof set? It would be wise to compare your coin to the pictures of the 69-S DDO cent that are in the Cherry Picker's Guide. They even warn about mistaking this particular DDO with common MDD.

It will cost you close close to $50 to get that coin graded and attributed. I'd make DOUBLY sure (pardon the
pun), before I send it in. If you don't have a CPG to compare pics, go to your local coin shop and get their opinion
on the coin. They may even be able to submit it for you to PCGS (if you are not a member with submission
privileges). If it's the real deal...I would go with Heritage Auctions.
Good Luck!

Happy Hunting!

Andy0:

The book that I am using is [ THE OFFICIAL RED BOOK 70th Edition. ]
and it states that a [ 1969S DblDie Obv. ] Penny - Value of an MS -63 is $75,000.00 --

I also read where an 1969 S Proof DDO sold at auction for $14,100.00 -

I have an 1969 S DDO - I personally cracked open a 1969 S - 5 coin Plastic Coin Display Case - If all 5 coins are an S series isn't that called a Proof Set??
