FS-801's Newly Acquired Ikes

Post by FS-801 » Sun Jan 19, 2020 11:32 am

Instead of creating a myraid of separate threads over time, I figured I would create a single thread to share and showcase my newly acquired Ikes from here on out. So, for my inaugural post I'd like to share this 1971-D with a Triple Talon Head die clash. I would also like to garner your opinions as to whether or not this could be a proof planchet struck with a worn die. This Ike kind of has a dual finish look to it. The bust and devices appear smooth and glossy, while the fields have a textured, satiny appearance. There are light marks on the bust, but I'm not 100% sure if they are post mint scratches, annealing drum chatter or a combination of both. I do try my best to not get carried away and see things that aren't there. Thoughts?

Hi FS-801...

As anyone will tell you it is very hard to tell without having the coin(s) in hand... that being said I have found
especially with the 1971-D Ikes that there are many more of the planchets were very shiney… possibly due to
the annealing process the metal went thru... others can chime in here who may know more about this subject!!! lol

From what I can see you have some nice finds... there are deals still out there & I do believe many NEW finds
will be discovered.... the USA coinage is going to be going through some major changes starting this year...
possibly to try to get more people interested into the hobby of collecting... only time will tell if it works... :-)

I personally am on the lookout for ikes… it is getting a little harder to get bulk ikes… so I go where ever I find them...
Happy hunting everyone!!!

That's a beautiful Ike!
I'm always on the lookout for Ikes myself.
Wish I had more time to do it.

Happy Hunting!
