1973 S clad proof set w/double die IKE

Post by dinkyblue » Thu Jan 21, 2016 5:19 pm

I have this 1973 S clad proof set with an IKE dollar that is a double die. I don't know if I should remove it from the gov. package, or leave it in. Some advice would help. Thanks................dinkyblue

In 1973 and 1974, due to promoted dies, many of the reverse dies bear the same upline doubled reverse. The R in DOLLAR demonstrates this on most 73 and 74 reverses. However, as you move up to the R in AMERICA and stars 9&10, you may even see tripling or quadrupluing in some examples. Then you more to the Earth Island and in some (typically those the have at least tripling in stars 9&10), there is doubling of the islands.

I've seen in this in SB SP CP and CB examples.

On the IDDD website, Tom Kalantzis classifies these as Master DDR:
M3 = stars 9&10 with tripling/quadrupling
M2 = stars 9&10 with doubling
M1 = no doubling in stars 9&10 (although there is doubling at the base of the R on DOLLAR

I would propose a modification:
M3+ = stars 9&10 with tripling/quadrupling and there is Island doubling present
M3 = stars 9&10 with tripling/quadrupling
M2 = stars 9&10 with doubling
M1 = no doubling in stars 9&10 (although there is doubling at the base of the R on DOLLAR

I save M3+ and nice M3 examples. These do not carry a premium, except to Ike nuts like me. M2 and M1 carry no premium to anyone, unless they are just plain nuts.

From what I can tell, the one in the photos is a M2 DDR.

Thank you: SteveP for the information, it is very helpful since I don't know much about IKE dollars. Now I can decide what to do with it. More than likely just leave it in the proof set. Thanks again...................Dan
