1971-S ANACS MS65 DDO-4?

Post by DoubleJ » Thu Jan 19, 2017 3:28 pm

The attachments are of a 1971-S ANACS MS65 just labeled DDO/DDR. The DDO appears to have the markings of a DDO-4 with vertical doubling on the "I" and left side of the "E" of LIBERTY and notching on the top and lower points of the "W" of WE. I could not position the "W" to clearly show the lower notching because of the glare, but the notching is there. Although the label indicates DDR, I could not find a single device or lettering that is doubled. Is it possible to have a DDO-4 without a DDR-21 on the reverse? I have a DIVA PCGS and an ANACS 1971-S 4/21's labeled as such to use for comparison for the obverse. There is always room for error on my part so, I'm asking for advice and opinions.

Thank you,
DoubleJ

That it from 1971S SB DDO Family 3. Characterized by the hallmark "split W", there are perhaps 10 or more dies in this look-alike family. The spread in the doubling varies considerably from moderate to minimal. Because of the like-pattern, but variable spread, it is possible that this family represents a systematic hubbing error rather than a simple transmission of upline doubling.

The four most robust split-W representatives of this family are DIVa 1SB-301 (aka "4/21"), DIVa 1SB-302, 1SB-303, and 1SB-304. Wexler's WDDO-004 is always paired with the WDDR-021. The reverse of the 1SB-301 (WDDR-021) represents true doubling of likely upline doubling, resulting in tripling to quadrupling (quadrupling seen better in earlier die states).

I can't identify your coin from the photos - you might want to check our listings for DIVa 1SB-302, 1SB-303, and 1SB-304 (each linked to in the above link)

Steve, looks like I have more homework to do. I appreciate the information and link. The coin is definitely not a 4/21, at least it is a good starting point.
