1973-S BB Proof DDO? LOTS of pictures

Post by MontCollector » Mon Feb 13, 2017 6:25 pm

Had this one for a while. Took best pictures I could with my 35mm and tube extenders. All I have for close-ups.

Is this a DDO? Or am I just seeing things?

Check for FS-101 markers - particularly the curved neck -> ear die scratch. Problem: same DDO pattern seen in other 73S proof and 73S SB Ikes. Likely a promoted die ( IIRC, Tom Kalantzis said it may have matched a DDO pattern seen in an earlier year) to 73 master.

Thank you for your reply

I did didn't see any die scratch on neck...was thinking it could be an earlier die state than one shown.

The FS-101 "Die Scratch" marker Steve is referring to actually starts at Ike's eye (in EDS of this particular die re-treatment state) and curves above and around the ear and directly into the middle line on Ike's neck. PCGS only missed one of the ones with that marker that I sent them....but that was many years ago! Not sure about other 73-S FS-101's because I never really got to look closely at any other certified ones.

Never tried NGC on any major CPG attributions. They ticked me off with refusing to attribute the FEV for so many years....I just had to take a time-out for a bit. 'Will probably go for an FEV attribution soon with them.

Since the FEV is in Red Book now, I think they ought to take the lead and NOT charge an extra attribution fee. Kinda like the 72-P Type 2. It's not like it's hard to tell....just look at the Earth and the islands....just like a Type 2.
I don't think PCGS should charge extra either ($18) for the same reason. Very few CPG Varieties make it all the way to the Red Book, and are that EASY to distinguish.

NGC was the LAST to finally attribute the FEV, perhaps they can make up for that by being the FIRST to do away with the ridiculous attribution fee and other TPG's could follow suit. The 72-P doesn't require extra $, the FEV shouldn't either.

Now, watch....If we stick to that argument, they'll probably start charging extra $$ for the 72-P Type 2 designation! :o

I went and looked again to see if there was a die scratch near the ear or anywhere on the bust. Alas there is none. That would make this a "look alike" then?

Tough to say. Could be. That's the only marker I ever used, but is only good for that one re-treatment.
Yours could be from before that re-treatment took place, or after it was re-treated again.
I haven't done much research into that variety.

Heads up: that die scratch is EXTRAORDINARILY hard to see depending upon light and angle. You can look with a 30X magnifier and never see it. Not saying you haven't checked it closely, just know it's not an in your face marker.

I can check MMP against the couple that I have. As I said earlier, there are a bunch of look-alikes, including across to 1973S SB.

Please do. Would love to see if they match up.
