1974-S mint mark distance from Ike's neck

Post by FerdWirth » Fri Jul 20, 2012 3:59 pm

I have been examining thousands of Ike dollars hoarded by a dealer, and just found a 1974-S Ike dollar for which the S mint mark is much further away from Ike's neck than any other Ikes I have seen. The distance is at least twice as far as other silver Ikes, including 1974-S Ikes. At this point, I am referring to this as a Far "S" coin. Were the mint marks hand set? Can anyone explain this to me, and is this unusual enough to save the coin? Ferd Wirth

Yes, the mint marks were punched in by hand in those days. They are put on the master die these days. I would think yours would be worth hanging on to.
