Other 71S SB S/S dies?

Post by SteveP » Sun Nov 25, 2012 2:44 pm

I have two identical die 71S SB coins that appear to have a S/S RPM. They are not the classic FS-501 with the stacked die gouges above the 1. These have a die crack that makes a sling-shot out of the Y, and two die scratches - one off the 9 towards the 7 and another between the 7 and the MM. They also have a nice DDO.
I read the Chapter and this: http://www.ikegroup.info/71Ss-sdraft.pdf, where there is suggestion of more than one S/S RPM die.
Has anyone seen / heard of the one that I'm talking about? If not, I'll post pictures later and let you decide for yourself.

I believe Brian had one and got it holdered by PCGS a few years back. The scratches around the date sound right. It's entirely possible it's the same die, but simply at a different state. Cracks can come and go on the same die as well.

I wonder if it was holdered as an FS-501? I would doubt it, but I'll ask him.

Photos (both coins with identical MMs and obverse die markers):

That's the best I can do with my equipment on the MM.
Markers:
The die scratch between 9 and 7, and the die scratch between 7 and MM (seen in above photo).
The die crack Y: http://palladinospics.shutterfly.com/106

Post if you have anything like this.

Also, I'm up for tips on better photographic equipment - I use a Lechturm 2 MP USB microscope and a telescoping microscope holder/stand.
