1974-S Proof S/S?

Post by Sumdunce » Tue Nov 11, 2008 5:49 pm

I found what I believe to be S/S indicators on a dealer marked 40% Silver Proof 1974-S Eisenhower today.

Was just wondering if these exist.

Here are the images of the mintmark (click images to see them more clearly):
74-SS_001.jpg
Visible doubled line in the center of the "S" bar.
74-SS_002.jpg
Notch on the upper back of the "S" loop where mintmark meets the field.
What are your thoughts?

Any thoughts?

I was thinking this may be proof (unintended pun) that the "S" mintmark punch was falling apart if it is indeed on a 40% Ike.

I am not so sure that it is an S/S....I think it is the "New" S punch being brought in.
This same, exact punch is seen on all of the 76-S Silver Ikes...little notch and all.

Guys, check out Wiles' little coin book, page 19.

Wiles makes a good case that this S punch was hub-doubled and revealed a changing doubling pattern over much of its life which extended from 74 into 75 (when a lot if not all TYPE 1 silver 76 Ikes were struck).

Wexler, in his book, pictures the same stage of clear doubling of the S that can be seen on Bill's 74-S Ike (which ANACS just holdered as S/S using Wiles' numbers, a nifty solution to an attribution conundrum, LOL!), stating it is the only known S/S RPM.

I think Wiles is correct. Rob
Now is the time to cherry Ikes. Lots of fruit still on the trees but don't wait too long. Rob Ezerman

Ok then... if the above was not an S/S... then this one might be one.

A friend found some Ikes at a gun show and called me to see if I was interested. I am glad I did not go with my gut response of "no".

It is still in brown box and cost me less than twice the cost of silver melt value.
