Has it been determined if PCGS labels FPL & SPL as FS-401?

These Peg Legs were created by the polishing (or abrading) done to the area between Ike's head and the "R" on the working or master dies.

Has it been determined if PCGS labels FPL & SPL as FS-401?

Has this been deceided?

If not I have the answer and it is YES!!! They don't pay attention to the difference. I have (2) recently graded Peg Legs both labeled as PCGS MS64 FS-401 and one is a FPL and the other is a SPL.

Gary please show us pictures of both. Are the Y and T the same? Do both coins have the same markers?
Thanks,
Bill

Oh, man, is PCGS going to have egg all over their faces if they continue to attribute the 71-S SB SPL as FPL! Rob

Gary, thanks for the scans. I phoned PCGS asking for the gentleman who is their modern varieties attributor and was given Ms Diaz who asked for details by email, that she would pass them along.

I sent her a fresh written summary of the differences and links to the Silver Peg Leg Cheat Sheet (http://ikegroup.org/CHEATSHEET.htm ) and our complete article on the subject. That was 8 July. Don't expect to hear back in any hurry, not holding my breath, just trying to help PCGS. Rob

Had to happen sooner or later.
Maybe they will like your write-up enough so much that
they will start designating the SPL as well?! :o

What I see happening, is a bit of confusion on PCGS's part where now valid FPL's simply will not get designated the first time around as there's no way they will designate an SPL since its not in the CPG.

Interesting though that James Wiles does point this difference out in his CONECA Attribution Guide on Eisenhower Dollars.

I can hardly wait for the new CPG assuming they'll produce one!
I cannot and will not be held responsible for my typing errors as it appears that there is a bug in the keyboard!
........I've tried on numberous occasions to fix the problme but it just keeps coming back agin and again! -L. Lydston 2008

the new CPG does not have a separate listing for the straight PL, shows pic o FPL.

So are they still designating both (if you pay them extra fees) ?

or did they stop designating the rarer straight peg legs?

I don't think think that they ever distinguished between the two. They just called them both FS-401's.
