NEW INFORMATION FROM HERB

Post by robEzerman » Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:34 am

From Herb:

"Here is TWO hot new pieces of 33 year old information for you. Page 92 of the Feb 1975 Numismatic Scrapbook says in part:

".... Now in the experimental stage in the mint, Rosenbaum explained, is a program to develop a steel alloy which can be struck into working dires with a single blow. The master hub must now strike the working die five times before complete detail is achieved, and often results in a broken die before the first coin is struck. One master die can strike 200 working dies, Rosenbaum pointed out. ....."

Can you imagine the potential for chaos with five hubbings??? Remember that it takes about a week to anneal a die after a hubbing in preparation for the next hubbing.

Also, five hubbings supports Bill's oft repeated point that all, make that ALL, die shops use older hubs for the initial hubbings of a die and save their newer hubs for the last hubbing.

As to the PPL, we now have supporting documentation for our theories about the etiology of the 71-S SB PPL and the "Almost PPL's" that can be found throughout the other Ike proofs. Rob
Now is the time to cherry Ikes. Lots of fruit still on the trees but don't wait too long. Rob Ezerman
