1977-D Peg Leg, Short E, No Eye, goatee - Lot going on

Post by Windycity » Tue Feb 05, 2013 5:26 pm

Here are pictures of a 1977-D Ike which I believe is a peg-leg but also has a bunch of other die erosion issues included and short E, missing eye and a small goatee mustache. All common markers for a 1977-D peg-leg?

Wow, there's quite bit going on with that thing - a blind Ike. To date, we haven't photographed a TRUE 77D peg leg. I for one am not sure they exist just yet. Can you get us some closer pictures of the R? It looks like it could be, but I can't quite make out the bottom of it. It looks like the lower left piece of the leg is missing due to something stuck in the die and in turn preventing strike up. I think I see a left serif shadow outlining the cavity in the die. We've seen other coins like this, I have a couple 72Ds with almost the exact same condition.

What is that on his bottom lip - a piercing?!?! And what's up with posting a third die chip on the front of Ikes profile in the space of 2 days after never having them posted on the site before? Not sure I've ever seen such a lopsided W in IGWT before - thing is, it doesn't look to be from abrasion. What a great coin!

Here are a few more closeups of the R with different angles and lighting. Also another image of the goatee and the E.

Wow! That is one seriously "chopped of E"!! :o

I know I haven't seen a whole lot that match the severity of yours. Is there any evidence of any clash marks on the
obverse?

Happy Hunting!

Nice. That second and third R picture look like the real deal. Great find. Almost of the ones we see in 77D still have very small serif remnants on the leg.

I found the same coin in my peg legs. My pictures are'nt as good but still shows the almost same coin. I can see part of a double chin above the clipped E.

Cousins!!

I double checked the 77D that is my peg leg showcase set and rephotographed it: http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/MySetRe ... ?i=1409874

Matching Clipped E, "Soul Patch" lip cud, and filled/abraded Eye. Also had some die clash remnants: a Grade C Talon Head and Grade B Unicorn.

Thanks, Pat, for the head's up. PS - your coin's R is nicer
