What caused this deformity

74D MS64 with a problem at the base of the neck Fairly smooth and blended until just above the D, then becomes a sharp edge. Flow has just about obliterated the F, G is visible but not well defined. Pictures from a couple of different angles.

I can't really tell anything concrete from the pictures. I would probably not put it past anything other than a week strike. That sharp edge is likely from metal flow stopping prior to getting fully into the die. This, again, is likely why the F.G. is mushy - didn't fill out the die all the way. This condition in that area is not all that uncommon.
