1972D missing copper clad.

Post by montaguenc » Wed Apr 19, 2017 3:22 pm

Hello all,

I have a 1972D Ike. Wierd thing is that it is missing the copper clad layer. The rim/reeds looks to be fully coated in nickel. The weight is 22.7 diameter is 38mm. What kind of error would this be?

Thanks

An Ike showing only the CuNi color on the reeds is not all that uncommon. From your pictures, the coin simply looks like it's got some toning/tarnish. A quick dip in E-zest will solve the mystery, but if I'm a betting man I'd say it looks like every other 72D when it comes out.

Ikes when missing the CuNi layer are absolutely unmistakeable - all the copper looks just like an overgrown cent....
