Four 71 S Proof APPL evaluations needed

Post by Tonemeister » Sun Sep 25, 2016 4:11 pm

I have four 71 S proofs that are looking for an evaluation. The first two are what I think are PPLs, the 3rd is questionable but has a faint split serif on the reverse of "top rt of L btm rt of A & possibly the low left of R" and a couple of the stars, and the fourth I don't believe is even a candidate but it does contain split serifs on the N of ONE and the top right of the L L. Need some input from the experts. Thanks!

PPL is another Ike that has a chapter in the big book, but is no longer given DIVa attribution/catalogue status. The PPL is nothing more than a proof in a more advanced die state after multiple polishings.
Of yours depicted, none look like a full PPL.

I would not personally pay a premium for a PPL. However, I would pay a small premium for a 1971S SP extremely faded peg leg R, to go in a "peg leg" collection.

None of the DDO/DDR look all that special, except for #3. The DDO is of the same pattern as the FS-103. It is clearly not THE FS-103, but from that DDO pattern family. Perhaps if you post a photo focused on the MMP area (see example photo below), I could do the MMP lines for your and see where it fits.
