1971-S Proof Ike - I believe it's an FS-106 with Strike Thru!

Post by FS-801 »

OK, so this is the last Ike of a handful in OGP that I recently finished shooting. I've shared others within the last few days. I almost couldn't believe it when I saw that split W in the motto. After taking close-up shots and comparing them to the PDF images, I feel confident that is is indeed the FS-106. I paid about $9 for this Ike on eBay because I liked the rustic peripheral toning. Also, this Ike appears to have been struck through a thread or fiber. It is located on the obverse just under the B of LIBERTY and ends on Ike's forehead. Does the Ike Group concur with this attribution? Thanks!

You can see the "split W" much better in this shot:

It is closely related, same family, but not a 106. Doubling is a bit more pronounced on the 106 and the MMP is much closer to Ike's bust than on this one. Still a great buy for only $9!

Happy Hunting!

Thanks, Brian. I didn’t even think to check the MMP. I should have, especially since it is so vital in determining a true FS-103. I mistakingly thought the split W was a unique marker for the 106. Always learning..... ;)

More split W's in 71-S, mostly because of the 103-106 "Family". Not near as many in the following years.
A legit FS-106 has the mint mark abnormally close to Ikes bust....only about half of the length of the S mint-mark away.

Happy Hunting!

Sadly, now that I have this information, I think a recent upgrade of mine is not a true FS-106, but a close family die. The mint mark isn't close enough to the bust. The doubling looks really close, but it's not exact either. The split W is there, but as I've learned, this isn't unique to the 106. This slabbed example (PCGS # 37102996, PR67CAM) appears to be a closer match to the "close relative" posted above. Do you concur? :(

The S mint mark appears to have an outline. RPM?

Your photography is amazing!

But, as Brian stated, not a DDO-022 (FS-106). Might I recommend studying the Authoritative Reference on IKE Dollars to get a better understanding of all the similar varieties?
I cannot and will not be held responsible for my typing errors as it appears that there is a bug in the keyboard!
